In this hero tutorial we will learn how to play hero role tanks in general and here I will discuss one example, Johnson. Actually the hero tanker gameplay guide is almost the same, which is often put on the body when teamfight and team backup, must be brave in front and smart using crowd control skills that are available to help friends get a kill when the team war, and the most important is to budge and sacrifice yourself for the team's victory.

The main task of a tanker is to support the team, not to target kill or even farming, do not take buff or last hit jungle monsters because the exp and gold are far more important taken by other hero roles such as marksman / assassin, then do not hesitate to sacrifice yourself when friends are difficulty / being stricken because it is far better for tanks to die than marksman / mage / assassin because they have to stay focused on farming and level up to be effective in the game. To maximize the role of tanks in the game, we also need to know the advantages and disadvantages of the tankers, we take the example of Johnson (who has reworked) the following.

Johnson's advantages:

Ideal in all phases, the main advantages of role tanks are that they are usually ideal in all phases, but there are also some very strong tanks in early games like Grock, Minotaur, Hylos, and Hilda.
The hero laning is very good, Johnson's special characteristic is that he can turn into a car and bring one friend to move lane quickly in one area map, this skill is certainly very good for ganking, defense / push lane, scooping the opposing team, including when trying run away from enemy pursuit.

Crowd control is very good, skill 1 Johnson has a stun effect and skill 2 has a slow effect which is very effective at close range, the combination of these two skills will certainly give a CC effect which is very helpful in teamfight. Indeed, in general, all tank heroes are equipped with CC skills which are useful for supporting and controlling the situation when they are war teams.
Hero tank damage is pretty good, there aren't many hero tanks that can inflict damage on the opponent, but since Johnson reworked on the 1st and 2nd skill, he can now provide significant damage magic in the game. Examples of other tanks that can provide good damage (pure tanks) are Akai, Minotaur, and Hylos.

Johnson's shortcomings:

Dependent on the team, basically any good tank is useless if the team cannot take advantage of the situation well, because it is very rare for people to play role tanks because if they get a handicapped team it will only make us a boxing run for the enemy team.
Crowd control is limited, skill 1 can only stun in one small area that is determined, then skill 2 also only gives damage and slow effects in the near area in front of it (the range tends to be very short so it needs to be very close / attached to the opponent hero), besides skill 3 will only stun if the enemy is hit by a car and is near the location of the collision.

We need to consider whether the tanks that we use have the ability to target or mass crowd control singles, for example the hero tanks with bulk CC capabilities are Tigreal, Akai, Minotaur, Gatotkaca, and Hylos, examples of hero tanks with CC single / limited target capabilities are Franco and Johnson. By understanding the limits on available crowd control skills, we can determine the right strategy in the game, usually tank heroes who have CC limited target skills will focus more on playing / kidnapping important heroes on the opposing team, while the hero with bulk CC will be more focus on the war 5 vs 5 team and disable all enemy teams at once.

Johnson tips build items:

This build item tip applies to all hero tanks (pure tanks) because basically we need to balance the defense / armor composition between physic and magic.
  • Build items in the first line are the most ideal, commonly used if the composition of the opposing team is balanced (there are 1 or 2 mages).
  • The second line item build can be used if there are 2 burst magic damager or more (2-3 mage) on the opposing team.
  • The third line build item is used if all opposing teams have magic damage (full magic resistance) attributes.
  • The fourth line item build is used if all opposing teams only have burst physical damage (full defense armor).

The point is we must be smart to analyze the output of physical and magic damage from the opposing team, note that there are also several assassins who provide magic attacks like Karina and Gossen, then there are also tanks that provide damage magic like Gatotkaca, Johnson and Hylos, so it's not just the mage need to be considered when choosing a defense magic item.

The build items above are not a benchmark for all tanks because the build items are just the standard I usually use when playing tanks, there are many other defense items that may be more suitable for certain situations, but still the most important thing is we must always take into account physical / magic defense because there are still many players who like to build mischief, when the enemy has 2 bursts of magic damage, they don't even build items of magic resistance at all, or instead the enemy team has a lot of physical damage and they don't even build armor defense items.
The most suitable battle spell for Johnson and hero tanks in general is Petrify and Flicker.

Use Petrify for extra crowd control, this spell is the most ideal for all types of role tanks because it is very useful for giving CC effects while on teamfight / war team.

Use Flicker to run away when critical or engage attacking enemies suddenly, this spell will be more useful to be combined with existing CC skills, examples of skill combination tanks that are suitable for use with Flicker:

  • Flicker + Skill 2/3 Tigreal
  • Flicker + 3 Minotaur Skills (rage mode)
  • Skill 1 Franco + Flicker (Flicker hook)
  • Skill 3 Lolita + Flicker
  • Skill 2 Gatotkaca + Flicker
  • For emblems, of course we use Tank emblems.

Johnson and all the tanks in general are heroes who are neutral (not strong / weak against certain heroes), because the most important key in playing tankers is teamwork, so indeed we will depend on our friends to be able to maximize the role of the tank well.

Tips & tricks for hero guide role tank / Johnson:

Don't ever take last hit jungle monsters, let alone buffs, because it's far more important to give to our other friends, do not insist (desire to kill) because the tank is not designed to kill but helps the team to get a kill, unless there is a chance can be used like a critical opponent.
Always ready to sacrifice for the team, good tankers will let themselves die / get stolen from the carry that is hit by opponents, certainly better if we can escape / run away when hit by a wound, but if we have to sacrifice one, then we are much better (as a tank) who sacrifice themselves.

Our main task is to stand up, try to backup the mage and marksman behind us, do not let the soft hero not be awake, always block the enemy from reaching the other mm / hero that we are protecting, especially when teamfighting we forget about being busy with combat, we forget friends behind and they will be caught by the assassin / fighter of the opposing team.
When using skill 2 we can still use skill 1 and basic attack, because this skill 2 must be directed so use basic attack help so that this attack can hit the target completely. Maximize skill 2 first because this skill will be more often we spam both for farming, cleaning minions, and close combat with opposing heroes.

Try to practice mastering the map when using ulti (car) skills, don't even hit the wall or go wrong when tracing the lane, I suggest trying to learn to drive this skill 3 in custom mode first, so we get used to and know where to go to reach the lane desired.
Pay attention to the map and see the condition of our team in the other lane, if they are in trouble we can immediately come to help / backup using the ultimate skill (this is Johnson's main advantage over other tanks). Besides this skill 3 is also useful for stealing enemy towers on empty lanes, especially in the phase late game where we can directly destroy the enemy base if the situation allows.
